Becoming a part of Camp Squeah’s Seasonal staff team can be an excellent opportunity to grow spiritually, gain skills & certifications, grow in ability as an outdoor educator, gain experience in an industrial kitchen and contribute to a community of ministry that is healthy and immersed in the beautiful setting of the Coast Mountains in BC.
Squeah seasonal staff opportunities currently exist in the spring and fall seasons of the years. Following the public school calendar, our seasons are typically mid March until the last week of school and the first week of school in September to the end of November. This year, in 2023, Squeah is looking for a few people to begin work in early March, throughout April and early May on site as Seasonal Staff.
Squeah’s mission statement is “In response to God who loves and calls us, Camp Squeah provides a place of refuge in a natural setting where people of all ages can build relationships, grow and be nurtured.” We accomplish this mission in part through outdoor education which connects physical activity with personal, spiritual and social development opportunities. We believe that the outdoors is the ideal setting to encourage the building of positive relationships between individuals, with the environment and also with oneself and the living God.
Camp Squeah seasonal staff play an important role in starting these positive relationships. They are integral relationship builders for Squeah. They will have the opportunity to impact and positively affect the kids in the groups. They will be the ones that students will remember.
The purpose of Outdoor Education at Camp Squeah, as a program and facility of the Mennonite Church in British Columbia, is to aid schools in providing a unique learning opportunity for their students in a unique setting in the Lower Mainland. Our approach to outdoor education programming with children is founded on the following principles:
1. We believe that living, learning, playing and working together in a residential camp setting promotes an awareness of community and an appreciation for one another as members of that community.
2. We believe in a creator God who provided and sustains the world we live in. We want to instill in the students a ‘sense of wonder’ and a ‘sense of connection’ with our natural world.
3. We believe in experiential education. Learning by doing.
4. We believe in choice. Participation in activities is always offered from a ‘challenge by choice’ perspective. We believe that choices students make are worth honouring even as we challenge their presuppositions and encourage them to explore new worlds for themselves.
Squeah Seasonal Staff Positions Currently Include: Kitchen dedicated staff and Outdoor Education staff.
Squeah Kitchen Dedicated Staff: There are just a few positions offered solely in the kitchen each season. These positions are, as a rule, strictly dedicated to kitchen work. There is the understanding that all staff will assist with work as needed but kitchen dedicated staff will spend 99% of their time working in kitchen related duties: cooking, food prep., cleaning, dish washing, dining hall set up, food service and other kitchen related responsibilities. Kitchen Dedicated staff have the more consistent hours and days due to the nature of the work involved.
Squeah Outdoor Education Staff: The bulk of seasonal staff are Outdoor Education staff. They will do a variety of work including kitchen related work, activity facilitation, maintenance, trail work, janitorial work and custodial work. Kitchen work makes up a greater portion of hours than the other responsibilities but outdoor education staff are first prioritized to facilitate activities for retreat groups to be sure we’re providing what the group requests. All outdoor education staff will participate in many activities and most of the different types of responsibilities listed. Prior to hire, Camp Squeah will designate a couple Outdoor education staff to be given the responsibility of cleaning and custodial work for our motel style retreat rooms for the spring or fall season.
Interested individuals are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. You can apply online, or print an application form and return it to us when those means are available later this year. If you have any questions about serving on seasonal staff or about the application process, please contact Tim Larson at 604.869.5353 ext. 105 or tim@squeah.com. Interviews will begin in Winter/Spring 2023. Please remember that you must be 17 years old to be considered for a seasonal staff position at Camp Squeah.
